How to trim your own neckline at home
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerUse a trimmer, not a razor, for the outline. Follow the line your barber left rather than inventing a new one, go a little lower than you think, and check with two mirrors or a camera after every few strokes.
Tools
A trimmer with a fine T-blade for the edge.
A hand mirror, or your phone.
Bright light.
Steps
Find the existing line your barber cut and follow it, rather than starting a new one.
Hold your head upright. Tilting your head forward moves the skin and the line ends up too high.
Clean below the line with short upward strokes, a little at a time.
Check both sides match before you go further.
The classic mistake
Going too high. If in doubt, leave it lower; you can always take more off next time.
General grooming tips, not medical advice. If you have a skin condition, a mole that changes, or irritation that doesn’t settle, see a doctor or pharmacist.
Questions
Should I use a razor on my neckline?
A trimmer is safer when you can't see well. Razors give a closer finish but nick easily on curves.
