The best light for shaving and grooming
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerLight your face evenly from the front, ideally from both sides of the mirror. A single overhead light casts shadows that hide stray hairs. Daylight-colour bulbs show colour and skin most accurately.
Overhead light hides things
A light above you casts shadows under your jaw and nose, exactly where precision matters.
Better setups
- Lights on both sides of the mirror.
- A window in front of you during the day.
- A small LED panel or lamp at face height.
Colour
Very warm bulbs make it hard to see fine hairs and skin tone. Neutral or daylight-colour bulbs help.
For hard-to-see areas
Shine a torch at a low angle across the skin: raised hairs throw small shadows and become easier to see.
Questions
Is a magnifying mirror worth it?
For close detail, yes. For overall shape, a normal mirror is better.
