How to trim your beard evenly at home
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerStart with a longer guard than you think, trim both sides with the same strokes, work in good front light, and check symmetry in the mirror and from below. You can always go shorter.
Set up
- Bright, even light from in front.
- Clean, dry beard, combed out.
- Start one guard size longer than your target.
Trim
- Trim the cheeks with the grain first.
- Do the same strokes on both sides.
- Do the neckline (see our neckline guide).
- Step down a guard size only if needed.
Check symmetry
Look straight on, then tilt your head up. A photo from the front shows unevenness the mirror hides.
